Aulden Farm Home Page
Aulden Farm is situated in the beautiful rolling countryside of the Welsh Marches. Surrounding our old farmhouse we have created an informally planted country garden and nursery.
There are many different aspects to enjoy from the dry stream which is planted with ferns and Iris ensata to the natural pond, a haven for wildlife surrounded by Iris sibirica.
Other iris are found around the garden and our hemerocallis collection is planted in two colour co-ordinated stock areas. 2007 was certainly a different year; the weather must have been the most talked about subject. But despite all that could be thrown at us, we had a good year. The garden naturally suffered and several areas were under water for days. Also we lost another old orchard tree - a great shame because of the wildlife they help to support. Mixed weather for the NGS days, but the homemade ice cream proved very popular even in April. We felt very privileged to take part in the HPS Summer Gardens Day. It was really good to see so many fellow hardy planters and to put faces to names. We hope they enjoyed themselves as much as we did. At Aulden we do all we can to encourage nature and garden in an environmentally friendly way. The birds, bats and butterflies give never ending pleasure. We are still trialling peat free composts. The results are interesting and a number of our plants are grown in a coir based mixture. We propagate most of the plants ourselves and are limited by what two pairs of hands can do. Besides, we are only human and enjoy working with a variety of plants thus you can expect small numbers but a wide range. Our plants are grown naturally without heat or forcing. Most herbaceous plants are in 1 or 1.5 litre pots. The prices will vary with size and difficulty of propagation, but a typical 1L pot will be about £3.50. However, some of the choice plants will be more, especially peonies and bearded irises, as you would expect. Opening Times: We are open Tuesday & Thursday 10am-5pm from April to August inclusive and Thursdays only in March & September. We are happy to see visitors at other times by arrangement. Group visits can be accommodated during the day or of an evening. We are also open some Sundays for the National Garden Scheme—27th April, 25th May, 29th June and 24th August 2008 (2.00-5.30pm). Note: The nursery and garden will be closed 6th & 8th May due to show commitments. Alun & Jill Whitehead
