Achillea 'Anthea' - Dense flat heads of creamy yellow flowers above silvery foliage. Deservedly popular for a soft effect and also useful for flower arranging. Ht 60cm
Achillea grandiflora - A very dramatic plant which looks stunning in a wilder setting. In late summer tiny white daisy flowers are held in good-sized heads above dissected foliage. Ht 90cm
We value the aconitum family for their spires of hooded flowers. As with many other plants, these are toxic and should be treated accordingly.
Aconitum 'Blue Sceptre' - A compact bushy form, white flowers with broad purple-blue edges. Ht 60cm
Aconitum carmichaelii 'Arendsii' - Tall sturdy stems needing no staking, giving a good rich blue vertical. Ht 120cm
Aconitum fischeri - Probably a form of carmichaelii with good glossy deeply cut foliage. Violet-blue flowers in late summer. Ht 75cm
Aconitum 'Stainless Steel' - Very distinctive steely blue flower spikes. Ht 90cm
Agastache 'Firebird' - Useful for late summer colour. Spikes of tubular upright pinkish-orange flowers. Great for butterflies and best in sun. Ht 45cm
Allium is not the ideal genus for our heavy clay soil, needing as they do good drainage, but well worth accommodating for their vertical effect or for popping up between other plants.
The seed heads are an added bonus.
Allium christophii - Giant heads of starry purple-pink flowers. Easy. Ht 30cm
Allium karataviense - Purplish-grey leaves, pinky-beige flowers the size of an orange, followed by good seed heads. Effective over a long period. Ht 20cm

Asphodelus albus £5.00 Spires of starry white flowers in early summer. Often mistaken for a camassia, but the brown bracts framing the flowers make it spectacular.

Aster x frikartii 'Monch' £4.50 Lavender blue flowers from July to October. Graham Stuart Thomas listed it as one of his six best plants. Ht 75cm
Astilbes have striking flower plumes that make a colourful contribution to a shady or moist area. Their foliage gives good spring interest and the seed heads are also decorative later in the year.
Astilbe crispa 'Perkeo' - Young bronze finely divided leaves maturing to a glossy dark green. Rose pink flowers. It can also be effective in a container. Ht 30cm
Astilbe 'Fanal' - Dark red flowers over darker foliage. Ht 60cm
Astilbe 'Irrlicht' - Snow-white. Vigorous, with dark foliage. Ht 60cm

Although astrantias are valuable traditional cottage garden plants they also associate well with grasses which are increasingly being used in today's more naturalistic type plantings.

Epimediums are excellent foliage plants which make good ground cover, more quickly in humus-rich soil. However, once established they can tolerate dry shade.
Cut back old leaves in late winter so that the delicate spring flowers can be appreciated.

Geraniums are a most valuable genus, providing a huge range of size and colour. All the following are easily grown, flowering over a long period and many will tolerate shady conditions.

Iris unguicularis - Treasured for its winter flowering fragrant flowers. Good for cutting. To flower well it needs a sunny well-drained position, perhaps at the base of a south facing wall. Ht 30cm
Kirengeshoma palmata - Maple like foliage and waxy lemon bell flowers in late summer. Good rich soil in part shade. Ht 60cm
The following kniphofias are good border perennials valuable for their vertical interest. They associate well with grasses, adding an extra dimension to the late summer border.
Kniphofia 'Brimstone' - Slender green & pale yellow pokers. A good tough perennial. Ht 75cm

Miscanthus 'Cosmopolitan' - Variegated broad leaves with a pronounced creamy edge. A very dramatic feature plant. Ht 200cm
Miscanthus sinensis 'Grosse Fontäne' - A tall majestic grass, vase-shaped which does not topple over. Red inflorescences in late summer maturing to silver.

Monarda (Bee Balm). Easily grown border perennials with aromatic foliage. They are best in a moisture retentive soil and give welcome colour in July with decorative seed heads to follow.

Nepeta faassenii - This low growing catmint was used extensively by Gertrude Jekyll as an edging plant.
Nepeta longipes - A taller growing plant with long spikes of lilac blue flowers in closely spaced whorls. Ht 70cm
Oenothera tetragona 'Fyrverkeri'- An Evening Primrose with bright yellow flowers emerging from deep red buds. Ht 60cm
Oenothera tetragona 'Silberblatt'- Similar to above, but with a variegated leaf.
Onoclea sensibilis - Sensitive Fern. Ideal for a moist position where it will spread happily. Ht 45cm
