Japanese iris can be used to enhance any waterside planting. Although frequently used in art, they are less common in the garden. They will grow in any lime-free border if the soil is retentive and will appreciate organic matter incorporated into the soil prior to planting. There are many forms today, having been bred for over 200 years in Japan and also during the last century in the USA. A typical iris has 3 standards and 3 falls, but with some ensatas the standards are also downward sloping giving the impression of 6 falls. This is denoted below by 3f or 6f. At Aulden Farm we are increasing the number of cultivars of Iris
ensata and intend to display them about the garden. To date, we have collected
over 100 varieties. Here is a view of part of the 'Iris Ditch' which was started in 2000.
This should be looking its best during the first two weeks of July.
